The 1976 Tien an Men Incident
Soldiers and civilians note down wall poster messages and poems in Tienanmen Square on April 5, 1976. This event, and later rioting, occurred on the traditional day of mourning, the Qingming Festival, and was triggered by the death of Premier Zhou Enlai earlier that year. The crowds strongly disapproved of the removal of the displays of mourning, and began gathering in the Square to protest against the central authorities, effectively headed by Jiang Qing and the "Gang of Four".
