Chinese urban youths sent to the countryside
Mao Zedong declared urban youth would be sent to mountainous areas or farming villages in order to learn from the workers and farmers there. It is estimated that some 16 million urban Chinese youth were exiled to work in the countryside during the Cultural Revolution. They were China's "lost generation."
