The road to the Ming Tombs

The road to the Ming Tombs
Near Peking the seven kilometer "Spirit way" (Shen dao) leads to the Ming Tombs. It is lined with statues of guardian animals. The avenue was constructed in 1540, during the Ming Dynasty. Today it is a heavily-developed tourist attraction -- in Mao's day it was just a road, frequented by horse-drawn traffic.
